Best Insulated Water Bottle: Hydro Flask vs. Yeti

Whether you’re looking to keep your drinks ice cold or boiling hot, there’s no question that you want the best insulated water bottle for your drink. It’s always nice to have a beverage that stays a the perfect temperature while you’re driving.

While there are plenty of offerings, perhaps the biggest war is raging with Hydro Flask vs. Yeti. These two brands have staged themselves as premium offerings, and truth is that you won’t lose if you choose one or the other. However, they both have individual pros and cons and it comes down to your preferences.

Summary: Both the Yeti & the Hydro Flask bottles are quality products. The Hydro Flask is the #1 best seller water bottle on Amazon, probably due to the larger range of colors and optional accessories (sold separately). However, the Hydro Flask bottles are not dishwasher safe and must be washed by hand to keep their pretty colors looking great. The Yeti Tumbler however, is stainless steel and can go in the dishwasher.

Yeti Rambler Vacuum Insulated Stainless Steel Bottle

yeti vs hydro flask

As insulation is a primary concern, you’ll be happy to know that the Yeti Rambler features a double-wall vacuum insulation system. This means that there’s an inner wall within the bottle, followed by a vacuum, and then the outer wall. There are two advantages to this system. The most obvious is that it keeps your drinks or other liquids at the desired temperature for hours. It also means that the bottle won’t sweat or experience any condensation, which ensures that it stays dry the entire time.

The Rambler just has plain stainless steel on the outside, meaning that it only has a few colors but that it’s also dishwasher safe. While most people will likely clean these bottles by hand, you can easily pop it in the dishwasher and be done with it.

The Yeti Rambler is an insulated water bottle that comes in three different sizes: 18oz, 26oz, 36oz and 64oz, with the most popular being the smaller one since it’s easier to carry around and it can easily be attached to bikes and bags. This bottle is composed on 18/8 stainless steel that is guaranteed to last through the harshest conditions.

A patented TripleHaul Cap ensures that liquid will not spill from the bottle, making it the best insulated water bottle for anyone who hates spills. The three-finger grip is secure and easy to hold on to.

Accessories are a little limited for the Yeti Rambler, but there’s a “chug cap” where you can pop off the top and easily drink from the bottle, and a straw top. These are purchased separately. The default cap must be fully removed before drinking. It features a convenient handle so that you can easily carry the bottle around wherever you go.

It comes in a range of colors, including black, red, navy, olive green, stainless steel, white and tahoe blue.

Hydro Flask Double Wall Vacuum Insulated

hydro flask vs yeti
The Hydro Flask is the #1 best seller water bottle on Amazon.

The Hydro Flask Hydration uses the same double-wall vacuum insulation, keeping liquids at their desired temperature while the bottle remains dry during your trip. This bottle has no trouble keeping coffee or soup hot, or water or iced tea nice and cold.

Unlike the Yeti, Hydro Flask utilizes a powder coat finish on their bottles. This allows you to choose from many different colors, and it gives the bottle a slightly different texture and better grip. However, you cannot put this in the dishwasher as the coating will peel off (the bottle will still remain durable even if all the powder finish comes off, so this doesn’t hurt durability, it just means the color will be removed). You must wash these bottles by hand.

Comparison of Hydro Flask different sizesMuch like the Yeti Rambler, Hydro Flask is a premium insulated water bottle and many of the same features will be repeated here. You can choose between 18oz, 32oz, 40oz, and 64oz. The bottle is made from 18/8 stainless steel, which is durable and will keep your liquids safe on any trip.

This insulated water bottle comes with a flex cap top and straw lid, making it easier to drink from the bottle. There are various other lids, like a wide straw lid, wide opening lid and wide flex cap with a larger handle. You get more accessories than the Yeti, and there are more available for a separate purchase. The lids are tight and durable, keeping your liquids safe during transport.

The HydroFlask comes in a huge array of colors, including blueberry, mint, black, cobalt, flamingo, forest, graphite, kiwi, lava, lemon, mango, olive, pacific, stainless, white & tangelo.

Pros and Cons

yeti rambler

At their smallest size, both bottles are nearly the same price. However, as you get into the bigger sizes, you’ll notice that the Hydro Flask is a little more affordable than the Yeti. If price is your main concern, then Hydro Flask is the better of the two.

There’s no clear winner here as both have their ups and downs. The Yeti’s pure stainless steel exterior allows for fewer colors and doesn’t have the same grip, but it’s dishwasher safe. On the other hand, Hydro Flask has a rainbow of colors and it’s slightly easier to hold, but the powder coating will peel off in the dishwasher.

You’re going to want a warranty on these as they are relatively expense as far as premium insulated water bottles go. Both feature warranties that will completely replace the bottle if there are any problems. The major different is that Hydro Flask offers a lifetime warranty without any additional charge, while Yeti’s lifetime warranty costs a little extra. Otherwise you’re stuck with a limited warranty.

If you just want to drink liquid and don’t care how you do it, then accessories properly aren’t important to you, but for many, they would like a little added convenience. Both of these units have accessories and different tops to customize your hydration experience, but the Yeti falls a little short.

Yeti Rambler Bottle Straw Cap

Hydro Flask offers twice as many accessories, and many of them allow you to choose how wide the straw or drinking area is.

Hydro Flask Protective Silicone Boot
Hydro Flask Protective Silicone Boot – available in various colors

For example, you can get these protective soft silicone boots for the Hydro Flask Water Bottle. This adds protection from scuffs and dents. An added bonus is that you can customize the look of your bottle by choosing a different color “boot” to the color of your bottle – Great if you have multiple bottles in the family, or similar looking bottles at the gym or sports team.

Both bottles should be completely spill proof, but accidents do still happen. This area is a big win for Yeti. Their patented lid design is significantly more durable and prevents spills better than Hydro Flask. While both should be fine under normal circumstances, Yeti pulls ahead in this area.

Desired Temperature

This is a very big area. The whole reason for seeking out the best insulated water bottle is because you want the liquid insulated and kept at your desired temperature (either hot or cold). Yeti actually wins here, but only by a little, and primarily with heat. Yeti is capable of keep liquids hotter for longer, but only by about 10 degrees and after four or more hours, otherwise the results are neck and neck. Hydro Flask is actually a tiny bit better at maintaining cold temperatures, but again, the results are only appreciated after many hours.

In general, both of these are the best insulated water bottle, it just depends on which benefits you want the most.
